Your choice of apartment rental impacts mental health

“Quality of life.” It has become such a buzz word these days that it has been used to justify everything from going vegetarian to quitting your job and going backpacking. We often overlook the impact of where to rent or live on overall well-being and health. Truth be told, affordable apartment rental with the right pricing, alarm monitoring, apartment cleaning services, convenient location near the LRT/MRT could very well be the missing link in the equation.

The workplace and the economy will soon be dominated by millennials. They’re the almost mythic segment of the population born from 1982 to 1992. What’s on their minds? Is it moving out and buying a house? Finding affordable apartment rentals with good pricing, believable reviews, cleaning services, convenient location, apartment alarm monitoring, and of course, wifi? Surprisingly or unsurprisingly, they are most concerned about quality of life. HR forums nowadays highlight that millennials, for example, value corporate culture more than compensation when it comes to choosing an employer. A generation ago, a good paycheck was usually the only deciding factor.

Today’s young professionals are looking for more than just the usual. This increasingly sophisticated generation, which came to age with the rise of digitalization, needs more than just a big house to be happy. Quality of life is all about overall satisfaction with life and covers everything from physical health, family, education, to employment, wealth, safety, security to freedom, religious beliefs, and the environment. A big part of this is home environment where you eat, sleep, relax, do your laundry, and spend a good deal of time.

Depression, work-related stress

More than 1/3 of young adults aged 18 to 34 choose to live at home with their parents. This is a much higher figure than for Generation Xers born 1965 to 1979 (10 percent), and the Silent Generation, born 1925 to 1945 (8 percent), at the same age. In Asia, this figure is even higher. An article on Curbed cites a survey by CBRE Group, a commercial real estate services and investment firm. The survey found that almost two thirds of Asia-Pacific millennials are still living with their parents. 18 per cent have no immediate plans of moving out at all with unaffordable real estate cited as the most common reason. Many attribute this to millennials’ much-criticized laziness, sense of entitlement, and narcissism. Truth is, they would probably want to move out, but affordable apartment rentals or housing are few and far between.

For young, working professionals that do find affordable apartment rentals, another issue to deal with is location. Is it near the LRT/MRT, bus stop? Is it generally accessible? Recent research is discovering a longer commute to work could have a negative impact on mental well-being.

According to a Business Insider article, longer-commuting workers are 33 per cent more likely to suffer from depression. 37 per cent have a higher tendency to worry about money and 12 per cent more likely to report work-related stress.
